From its humble beginnings as a daycare centre in a garage in 2009, Angel Special School has come a long way in supporting children with disabilities. Guided by the needs of these children, quiet determination and the leadership of Soojanee Sok Appadu, the NGO has steadily expanded its services to better serve the south of the island.
A landmark moment came in 2017 with the opening of the Therapy and Training Centre in Rivière des Anguilles. In partnership with the JKP Care Foundation, qualified professionals provide autism diagnoses and guidance for both parents and staff. The centre offers several therapies (speech, physiotherapy, occupational and psychological support) to students of the SENS school, while also serving community members who would otherwise have limited access to such care.
Swavna Simathree, coordinator of the centre highlights the centre’s role in skills development, offering vocational training in handicrafts, pastry, and hydroponics, alongside support and training programmes for parents. Empowerment and independent living remain central to the school’s mission, with annual residential camps helping children build social skills and autonomy.
Students have also represented the NGO at international conferences in Dubai and India. Beyond Mauritius, Angel Special School extends therapy services to Rodrigues, continuing its journey of growth, inclusion, and impact across the region.
