As Mauritius continues to grapple with the growing impact of substance use, Not A Number has partnered with the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town to strengthen the capacity of frontline practitioners supporting individuals affected by addiction. Over five days, visiting experts Professor Goodman Sibeko, Shaheema Allie and Fergus Ashburner delivered an intensive training programme designed to equip participants with practical, evidence-based tools and interventions.

The initiative brought together 20 participants from 14 NGOs, along with representatives from the Mauritius Prison Service and the Mauritius Police Force. Through 14 interactive workshops, participants explored key topics including Substance Use Disorders, Motivational Interviewing, Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches and SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment). Practical exercises, role plays and case discussions ensured a hands-on learning experience focused on real-world application.

Beyond strengthening technical competencies, the programme fostered valuable networking, reflection and collaboration among organisations working on the frontlines of substance use issues in Mauritius.

As Preetee Gopaul, Director of Not A Number, explains: “Our goal is not simply to deliver a week of training, but to build lasting capacity within the sector. By exposing practitioners to evidence-based tools and techniques, and providing ongoing coaching over the next six months, we hope to strengthen the quality of support available to individuals and families affected by substance use challenges.”

The partnership marks an important step towards strengthening drug interventions and improving outcomes for communities across Mauritius.
