For many people with intellectual disabilities, opportunities to participate in recreational activities are still limited.  The annual Ferney Trail helps change this reality. Through the participation of its members, Self Advocates Inclusion Mauritius (SAIM) promotes social inclusion, wellbeing, greater awareness of intellectual disability, and access to meaningful recreational experiences.

What began five years ago with fewer than 20 participants has grown into one of the most anticipated events for SAIM youth. Year after year, enthusiasm has increased, and in 2026, a record 80 young people took part in the Ferney Trail.

The event offered much more than a sporting challenge. It provided participants with an opportunity to build confidence, connect with others, enjoy the outdoors, and demonstrate their abilities. Despite muddy trails, slippery terrain, and unpredictable weather conditions, the determination of the participants never wavered.

Through teamwork, perseverance and mutual encouragement, the 80 young people successfully completed the race, an achievement celebrated by families, volunteers, and supporters alike.

By taking part in the Ferney Trail, the self-advocates have shown that people with intellectual disabilities can overcome challenges, achieve their goals, and fully participate in community activities. Their accomplishment underscores the importance of creating inclusive opportunities where everyone can belong, contribute, and flourish. It is a powerful reminder that recreation, social participation, and wellbeing should be accessible to all.
