Our projects Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) endeavours to protect and safeguard the natural heritage of the Republic Mauritius from extinction through scientific conservation work and community awareness. The MWF is the pioneer and the largest non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Mauritius whose mission is to save endemic Mauritian and Rodriguan Fauna and Flora, undertake research and implement programmes to restore and manage the ecosystem, share the results with the public and protect the native species’ future.

The fauna team have five long-term projects (Kestrel, Pink Pigeon, Echo Parakeet, Mauritius Olive White-eye and Mauritius Fody) that focus on the conservation of our most threatened endemic bird species i.e., these species are found nowhere else in the world. All five species populations declined dramatically post colonisation due to habitat destruction and introduced predator and competitor species along with a host of other factors. The Echo Parakeet and Mauritius Kestrel projects are the most physically demanding projects, involving rope climbing, and hiking with heavy rucksacks within the Black River Gorges National Park and the Bambou range. MWF has had great success restoring each of these species’ populations, but there is much work left to be done to secure their long-term survival and achieve our mission.
