SOS Poverty
SOS Poverty offers a variety of services aimed at empowering vulnerable groups through comprehensive training courses. SOS Poverty focuses on reducing poverty through inclusive education and self-help socio-economic programmes. SOS Poverty provides a range of services to empower vulnerable groups and alleviate poverty:
- Educational support through the “Accompagnement Scolaire” project for primary and secondary school students.
- A Functional Literacy Programme and IT courses to make women and young girls employable.
- Childcare Services for infants and toddlers, and a pre-primary school for young children.
- Social aid programme in the form of social housing, paying education fees, covering medical bills, and offering emergency interventions to reduce family burdens.

Founded in 1998 and officially registered as an NGO in February 2000, SOS Poverty has been dedicated to alleviating poverty and promoting social integration in Mauritius. The organisation received its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) accreditation in January 2009. Over the years, SOS Poverty has developed and implemented various projects and programmes aimed at empowering vulnerable groups, enhancing employability, and fostering active citizenship through quality educational and empowerment initiatives.

Our mission is to combat poverty through inclusive education, training, and self-help socio-economic programmes. We believe that a poverty-free Mauritius is achievable through the genuine active participation of people in improving their economic conditions.
SOS Poverty has accomplished significant milestones in its mission to alleviate poverty and empower vulnerable communities. Some of the main achievements include:
- Establishment of the Pre-Primary School “Les Abeilles” and the Pre-Vocational School “Ecole de l’Espoir”, along with the Accompagnement Scolaire programme.
- Providing literacy training and vocational training for the unemployed, and empowering women through skills development in sewing and cookery/pastry.
- Implementing community and social programmes such as parental education, a revolving fund, community development initiatives, and housing construction projects.
- Conducting a research project on unemployment and advocating for social justice.
- Offering a medical scheme and food distribution programmes.
- Running social leadership training programmes and ICT skills development programmes for the unemployed and under-employed.
- Engaging in networking to strengthen community ties and support systems.
