Chrysalide

Chrysalide is a rehabilitation centre dedicated to women who are dependent on substances (including drugs and alcohol), sex workers, and those living with HIV, as well as their children. Our residential therapy programme lasts between one and two years, providing comprehensive support and care.

In addition to our residential rehabilitation programme, Chrysalide has been operating a shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence and their children since December 2017. At this shelter, women receive psychological, administrative, and legal assistance, as well as capacity-building activities aimed at fostering independence and successful re-integration into society.

Services offered

Our rehabilitation programme includes various support measures to ensure comprehensive care and successful re-integration:

  • We provide therapy with the support of a psychotherapist to address underlying issues and promote mental well-being.
  • We offer accompaniment and follow-up for women undergoing codeine treatment.
  • We support women undergoing treatment for HIV/AIDS and/or hepatitis. Approximately 95% of our residents live with HIV, and testing is offered upon entry to the residence.
  • Through training programmes provided by Fondation Médine Horizons and the Ecole de Technicienne de Maison de Rivière Noire, we facilitate professional reintegration. Opportunities are available in call centres and in gardening services, sewing, and more.
  • Since December 2017, Chrysalide has operated a shelter for women victims of domestic violence and their children, providing psychological, administrative, and legal assistance. Capacity-building activities are also offered to promote autonomy and successful re-integration.
History

Following an investigation into juvenile prostitution, the Chrysalide residence was built with funds from the European Union. The first resident was welcomed in November 2004, marking the start of operations on 4th November 2004. The official inauguration took place on 15th January 2005, and the organisation was incorporated on 18th May 2005. Since then, Chrysalide has been assisting individuals affected by illness and addiction, supporting women until they achieve complete autonomy.

Objectives
  • To address drug dependency by providing a holistic approach to care and treatments for issues related to drug addiction.
  • To re-integrate women who are dependent on drugs and alcohol into society.
  • To support and offer comprehensive care for women living with HIV/AIDS.
  • To provide specialised care and assistance to women who are sex workers.
  • To empower former substance-dependent women to achieve autonomy and independence.
Main achievements

The name "Chrysalide" symbolises the transformation process women undergo until they emerge with their true inner beauty. Just as a butterfly emerges from its cocoon, beautiful, confident women will emerge from our programme. Today, Chrysalide is the only centre dedicated to the social rehabilitation of women who use substances, including alcohol, sex workers, former detainees, and those living with HIV. We provide 24/7 support, and their children are also welcomed into the residential programme if necessary.

Sources of funding

Chrysalide operates with an annual budget of approximately Rs 2 million, sourced from:

  • Private funds (CSR)
  • The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare
  • The Ministry of Health and Quality of Life.

On average, Chrysalide supports 15 mothers and their children, with a capacity to accommodate up to 25 women.

Chrysalide also conducts outreach and prevention campaigns in schools, youth centres, and women's centres.
