Association Anou Grandi

Association Anou Grandi is dedicated to the care and education of children with disabilities. Recognised as a Special Education Needs School (SENS), the school welcomes children regardless of cultural background, religious belief, social status, or political affiliation.

Families who entrust their children to us can be confident that they will be cared for with dignity, compassion, and encouragement, enabling them to reach their highest potential and develop greater independence. Our work focuses on supporting children with developmental disabilities through holistic, child-centred education and care. Parents play an active and valued role in the life of the Association, working closely with educators and caregivers.

The school is open to visits from existing and prospective sponsors and partners. To ensure transparency and accountability, regular project status reports are shared with all sponsors.

Services offered

The school is committed to providing high-quality special education that enables children with disabilities to experience school life and learning in an inclusive, supportive, and enriching environment. Physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as recurring health conditions, can significantly affect school attendance and learning, making specialised attention and care essential.

Access to an adapted curriculum, together with appropriate teaching methods and assistive devices when required, plays a vital role in supporting each child’s learning and development. Through these measures, the school strives to create meaningful educational opportunities that respond to the unique needs and abilities of every student.

The school operates 14 classes, each with a small group of 7 to 8 students, ensuring personalised attention, close teacher–student interaction, and effective learning support.

We provide the following programme:

  • Elementary preparatory education
  • Primary Education (The school is a registered centre for PSAC exams)
  • Technical Department for Young Adult Education Programme (inc. self advocacy and employability in collaboration with Inclusion Mauritius)

History

Lekol Anou Grandi was founded in January 1999 by Gina Poonoosamy, a mother to a child with disability who firmly believed that children with developmental disabilities had the right to quality care and education.  It started one student and a team of three dedicated staff members. Today, the school supports 83 students aged 5 to 20 years, guided by a committed team of 31 teaching and non-teaching staff, along with five part-time professionals and skilled trainers.

In December 2000, the Association Anou Grandi was founded to continue the work that was being done at school.  It was registered in July 2001 as association and as a non-profit Charitable organization under the provisions of The Registration of Associations Act 1978, that is dedicated to the care and education of children with developmental disabilities.
