Project background / purpose
The Pink Pigeon recovery program has seen the restoration of this endangered species from only 10 individuals in 1990 to over 470 individuals in 2018.
The long-term survival of the species depends upon the management of the sub-populations and habitat restoration.
The post holder will be responsible for assisting to manage (if there is a more senior field staff at the assigned site) or managing the sub-population, at the assigned field station, of this Mauritian endemic, and to develop the project to ensure the future survival of the species.

The position
A unique opportunity to join a dynamic field team, and contribute to the conservation of what was formerly considered amongst the rarest birds in the world.
The project is considered as being one of the most successful bird conservation projects conducted.
The position offers the successful applicant the opportunity to learn a wide range of field skills relating to the monitoring and management of the species including bird handling (ringing, blood sample collection, and collection of morphometric measurements).
This is an exciting opportunity to work with a species and a project that is known internationally amongst conservationists.

Qualifications / requirement
We are looking for applicants that have the following qualities/experience:

  • Good level of physical fitness and stamina.
  • Experience working outdoors (especially hiking and navigation in the forest and in difficult terrain).
  • Ability to work alone, in all weather, in remote and rugged locations.
  • Strong observation skills.
  • Good practical skills.
  • Good communicator – written and oral.
  • Strong initiative and independence; must be able to work unsupervised on a day to day basis.
  • Ability to live and work with teams and persons from different backgrounds in remote arduous conditions.
  • Able to follow and work to established protocols.
  • Must not be color blind.
  • Proven interest in wildlife conservation and in the protection of the environment.
