Conservation Biologist

This is a unique opportunity to work on an exceptional conservation site, Round Island, and contribute to protecting and restoring its ecosystem.

  • The successful applicant will work in a team totaling three Conservation Biologists who lead the work on Round Island.
  • This core team of three are supported by other Conservation Biologists with different skills.
  • Staff work on a rotation of one month on the island, living in the field station and two weeks on the mainland, with one week off and one week working
  • The post requires a high level of physical fitness, self-motivation, organisation and people skills, in addition to having a scientific background.
  • Staff must be comfortable travelling by small boat in rough seas. Being able to swim and a clean driving license is preferred.
  • Certification in first aid is a requirement and training in wilderness first aid would be an advantage.
  • Experience of working in remote conditions alongside others from different backgrounds and cultures is desirable.
  • The work is multidisciplinary with the main conservation themes of flora, seabirds and reptiles.
  • Plant work involves plant propagation, the control/removal of invasive plants and restoration of the island’s plant community.
  • Animal work covers monitoring and handling of reptiles and seabirds.
  • Accurate data collection/entry and reporting are a necessity and the work also entails maintaining infrastructure, organising changeovers, ensuring biosecurity measures are maintained and leading other staff, interns and students that are working on the island.
